Design and Fabrication by Building Brown Workshop for Maria Gaspar

These resonator boxes and performance stand were a collaboration with artist Maria Gaspar and her multimedia project We Lit the Fire and Trusted the Heat (after Angela Davis). Gaspar approached Building Brown Workshop seeking a design solution that could act as a stand and improve the resonant quality for a set of 18 reclaimed jail bars being percussed as part of sound performance. After a series of prototypes, the final design consists of a thin wall plywood box with tensioned strings suspending the bars at specific points for maximal resonance.
